The tiny flightless Slender Bush Wren lived in the forests of New Zealand, making nests among tree roots and fallen logs. By the 1960s it was only found on remote Big South Cape Island. Introduced rats eventually invaded this refuge, wiping out the last of the wrens in 1972.
