A poor flyer, this New Zealand bat was more at home on the forest floor than the air. It crawled on all four legs, tucking its wings into special pouches on the sides of its body. Unfortunately, it was easy prey for rats, and the last Greater Short-tailed Bats disappeared in the 1960s.
