The beautiful feathers of the Mamo were once used to make cloaks for Hawaiian kings. When Europeans arrived in Hawaii, they also began hunting the birds. This, plus an outbreak of disease, caused the numbers of Mamos to fall dramatically. The last of these birds was seen in 1898.
