18- Name:  New Zealand Quail
Scientific Name:  Coturnix novaezelandiae

The New Zealand Quail, or Koreke, was once common in grasslands and along riverbanks. It spent most of its time on the ground, taking to the air when frightened. Hunters killed large numbers of these birds for sport. Combined with habitat loss, this led to its extinction in 1875.
